Trekking to the fortress of the first great war WW1 on Monte Baldo

MAP OF TREKKING TO CORNALE' FORTRESS
The map of how you reach the Cornale' fortress detect by GPS (file from us upon request)

Trekking to the Cornale fortress on unmarked paths requires use of GPS

The easiest way to reach the fortress is to follow the road (no driveway - only hiking) which leads from Val dei Berti to the Madonna del Cornale'. This is a sanctuary built in the seventies which has a particular history. A man from the village of Saccone fell off the cliffs of the mountain while cutting the wood but was able to save his life. In order to thank the Madonna he offered his voluntary work to build a chapel together with the funding of some devout women. Thus they built this small holy sanctuary on the rocks of the Cornale' which was difficult to reach. Subsequently a small church was built in the adjacent wider and easily accessible place. The place is panoramic with a view of the Adige valley and at the same time very intimate in the shade of a fantastic forest; a this is a compulsory visit. The path from the little church up to the Cornale fortress is only 350 meters long hiking but the absence of paths involves the use of GPS or even better of a person who knows the route. We had pointed out the route using colored slings on the trees but obviously someone is not happy to see visitors in the area and our tracks have been systematically erased ...!

CORNALE' FORTRESS TUNNEL the main fortress tunnel on Monte Cornale'

As an alternative we are proposing an interesting round trip hike along the crest of the Cornale'. It starts from the pass indicated by the sign Pozze and you reach some small houses built in stone during the First World War (WW1) and which have been rebuit later on. A new cemented road allows you to comfortably reach an antenna located on the southern summit of the Cornale'; from here the view over the historic farm of Piazzina and across the Valle dell 'Adige is truly rewarding. It comes down slightly from the hill and following more or less the crest of the Cornale'. The track takes place with unmarked trails and requires a bit of mountain experience but allows you to visit some hidden trenches, posts and tunnel of WW1. After about a kilometer on the ridge, turn slightly left (West) and reach an easy path that leads to the Madonna del Cornale'. From here to the fortress the route is short but not marked, as described above. The return takes place on the dirt road that leads to the Val dei Berti. The trekking takes place on short distances and in limited time (about 2 hours) but requires attention and a certain experience on untracked paths.
