THE CANYON OF TORRENT SORNA - THE CORNALE' FORTRESS

Only twentyfive thousand years ago, the chain of Monte Baldo was submerged by a layer of ice which reached the altitude of about 1500 meters. The last ice age had the duration of about a thousand years and the peaks of Monte Baldo emerging from the ice developed plants and insects that are called endemic species. The name refers to the fact that these species exist and thrive only in this place now famous among biologists around the world. After the last ice age the chain of Monte Baldo was the only way of communication between the Po Valley and Northern Europe through the Alps. Where it is currently located is Lake Garda, impetuous flowed the river Adige; Val Lagarina was a large lake (hence the name) and unhealthy marshes. The mountain chain of Monte Baldo was then the only way forward, and this is evidenced by numerous findings. The natural park of Monte Baldo is famous not only for nature trails but also for all the possibilities in the field of sports in contact with nature: mountain biking, paragliding and now also the new discipline of canyoning-trek.
Acknowledged by the world there are still two areas inside the Natural Park almost unknown: the Sorna torrent and the fortifications of World War I on Monte Cornale'. Since the middle ages the steep riverbed of the river Sorna has been constituting a resource for local people: there used to be cultivated fields, mills, forges, sawmills and a network of mule tracks that made up the infrastructure for access to productive areas. The industrial revolution of the sixties brought downstream and in big cities the active residents of the area and with them vanished the vegetation, the ancient paths, almost forgotten traditions, customs, legends and the historical memory of a population.
The other story is the World War I Observatory on Monte Cornale'. In the surrounding villages there was talk of a fortress carved into the rocks during the first World War, perhaps the first aerial defence. It told of a powerful searchlight illuminating the main aircraft from Innsbruck and headed for Ala to bombard the Italian army depots. It seemed a legend even for the reason that the few local hunters who knew the place absolutely avoided to reveal the location. In the 1970s some educated locals have carried out thorough surveys and photographs in both parts of the river Sorna and Cornale's but unfortunately nothing remains in writing.

Short history of canyoning at Lake Garda Italy

The word canyoning many years ago has not even existed. When we rapelled into the torrents in search of adventure, it was called "torrentismo" in Italy and "descente du canyon" in France. One of our clever colleagues created the neologism "canyoning" which is now famous all over the world. Our mountain guides of Alpine School Arco at lake Garda Trentino began to accompany their customers in this new discipline and they had good reason as in the canyons rope maneuvers and typical mountaineering techniques have to be applied. Only the environment is different and thus were born many abusive centers (especially in the Dolomites) which accompany the "naive customers" in the dangerous activities of torrentismo. In the year 2000, canyons was great fashion in Italy and every housewife, without any mountaineering experience, had to participate in the torrents, logically, the number of accidents was very high. For the canyoning - trek at lake Garda Trentino it is not required to have an extraordinary hi - tech equipment nor does it involve complicated tobogas or dangerously challenging jumps, etc. It only takes a pair of good boots and great passion for adventure!
